"When Jesus donned the towel and washed the feet of his disciples, he modeled servanthood for us all. Jesus’ ministry is that of the deacon, the ministry of service. Throughout his ministry he demonstrated compassion for the ill, the marginalized, those inhabited by evil spirits, and sinners of all kinds. Time and again, he hosted his followers at meals large and small. He was available to those in physical, emotional and spiritual need."
At First Presbyterian Church of Stamford, the Board of Deacons is a ministry of ‘compassionate hospitality’ designed to extend the fellowship of the body and love of Christ beyond the Sunday service. The Board has three specialized committees that serve the church and its members.
Fellowship and Involvement Committee
The role of this Committee is to present the church as a warm and friendly community. Its goal is to encourage and assist church members in becoming actively involved and feeling included in the worship and programs of the church. This goal is attained through a variety of activities conducted by the members of the Committee:
Organize and conduct key church events comprising the following:
Christmas Brunch (December), Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper (February/March), Shalom Breakfast (March/April) and Pentecost Picnic (May/June)
Arrange Greeters to welcome all attendees at each Sunday service
Host a Coffee Hour after each Sunday service
Organize the preparation of casseroles for those in need and coordinate their delivery
Send birthday greetings to church members over age 65; and congratulatory, get well and condolence cards as appropriate
Organize and conduct Memorial Receptions as needed
Oversee recruitment of Prayer Vine members and organization of pastor-designated prayers
Visitation and Support Committee
The members of this committee have a mission of personal contact and comfort to the ill or recovering church members whether at the hospital, nursing home, rehabilitation center or home
Congregational Outreach Committee
The outreach or zone deacons are each charged with serving, care-giving, ministering and communicating with the church families within a designated geographic zone. They act as the eyes and ears of the church, charged to communicate with families and keep them well advised on church events, using the phone, mail, email and personal visits.
Each zone deacon is additionally responsible for managing the visitors’ kiosk in the narthex during the month that corresponds to their own zone number. They welcome visitors and invite them to complete an information form that is passed to the church office and ministers. They encourage visitors to attend coffee hour so they may be introduced to other church members.
