Beginning in August 2006, FPC has sent Mission Work Week Teams to help with the rebuilding of New Orleans. To date over 130 different persons have journeyed south - many of them multiple times. Our first three teams worked through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and stayed at a PDA camp in Luling, LA - across the Mississippi River from New Orleans. Those teams spent their time gutting homes "down to the studs." Some of the homes they worked in had been filled with up to 12 feet of water and mold was ubiquitous.
The fourth team was our first youth team and also the first trip in partnership with St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church's RHINO or Rebuilding Hope in New Orleans outreach ministry. The SCAPC Session launched RHINO just three weeks after Katrina. The first work team converted a large house behind the church into a dormitory. That youth team also marked the transition from gutting to building. They framed the first floor of the first home on Ferry Place which was SCAPC's partner project with Habitat of New Orleans.
